Used GEA Refrigeration, Genuine Parts, and Boiler vs Water Heater: A Cost Controller's TCO Checklist

If you're comparing equipment quotes by the sticker price alone, you're probably overpaying. After managing a $30,000 annual equipment budget for a 60-person cold storage company for six years — and analyzing $180,000 in cumulative orders — I can say this with confidence: the cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest purchase once you add downtime, spare parts, energy use, and disposal.

In this post, I'll walk through four examples that changed how I buy: genuine GEA centrifugal parts, used GEA refrigeration equipment, boiler installation vs water heater, and even a $70 Lasko heater.

Why Trust This Data?

Used, certified and rebuilt: $64,000 — or rather, $64,500 with freight. I want to say the inspection report showed 10,000 more running hours, but I might be misremembering. The unit ran for 26 months without a single unplanned stop. That fallback saved us from a full shutdown when the primary compressor went down in January 2024.

That doesn't mean you should buy the first used GEA compressor you see at an auction. The non-negotiables are: an inspection report, a cold test or performance test, a documented service history, and some form of warranty. Boiler Installation vs. Water Heater: It's About Load Profile

Here's a decision that many facilities managers frame wrong: “should we install a boiler or just buy a commercial water heater?” The answer depends on what you're heating and how often. If you need continuous hot water for cleaning systems or process heat, a high-tank water heater can struggle. A properly sized boiler — combined with a plate heat exchanger like a GEA model — can separate the heating loop from the potable water loop and handle variable loads better.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy (energy.gov, accessed January 2025), tankless water heaters are often 24–34% more energy-efficient than storage tank units in low-demand homes. But commercial loads are not low-demand homes. At high usage levels, the efficiency advantage shrinks. In our facility, the installed cost of a boiler + heat exchanger setup was about 40% higher than a big storage tank heater. But the boiler system cut fuel input by 18–20% per year. Before you choose, ask three questions:

  • Could a heat exchanger extend the life of the boiler by isolating the potable water?

If your hot water demand is under 100 gallons per day and likely stays low, a water heater may be the right TCO. Sizing is everything. And installation quality matters more than most buyers expect — a badly installed boiler burns fuel like a leaky tank. We learned that the hard way in 2021.

The Lasko Heater Trap

I almost didn't include this, because it sounds too small to matter. But in 2023, we had a supervisor complain about cold feet in an corner office near the loading dock. A $70 Lasko heater seemed like a no-brainer. We bought two, actually. What I didn't account for was the electricity. The heaters ran 12 hours a day, five days a week, and the maintenance crew kept turning them up. By February, the added power bill was roughly $180 a month for a single small room. Now, to be fair: resistance heaters are 100% efficient at converting electricity to heat. The problem is distribution. Boundary Conditions & Honest Exceptions

None of this is absolute. There are times to buy the look-alike part: if the equipment is scheduled for replacement within 12 months and downtime is not critical, a cheap part can bridge the gap. There are times to buy used GEA refrigeration equipment: as backup capacity, not as the sole critical unit. There are times to choose a water heater over a boiler: small batch operations with low, intermittent demand. And there's a time to use a portable heater: an emergency, a temporary job, or a single occupied room with adequate insulation.
