Used GEA Screw Compressor vs New GEA Heat Exchanger: A Buyer's Guide (Plus Hot Water Heater Thermostat Reset)

If you've ever had a maintenance request for 'something to fix hot water' and a capital request for a used GEA screw compressor hit your desk in the same week, you know where I sit. Here's what I've learned: there's no one-size-fits-all answer for buying or fixing thermal equipment. The smart choice depends on your timeline, your risk tolerance, and whether you have a maintenance team that can handle surprises.

Scenario A: It's the Thermostat—Not the Whole Heater

Before you order a new electric heater, a hot water heater, or even a replacement GEA heat exchanger, spend 20 minutes checking the simplest failure point. In a surprising number of cases, the problem is a tripped thermostat.

This is the procedure I've used for electric resistance water heaters in our plant. If your equipment is set up differently, stop and call a qualified tech.

  2. Take off the access panel(s) for the upper and lower thermostats. That usually means one or two screws.
  3. Look for the red RESET button. Push it firmly. If you don't see one, find the high-limit switch and press the reset next to it.
  4. Set the temperature to 120°F—or 140°F if the application needs it. According to the U.S. Department of Energy (energy.gov), 120°F is the recommended setting for most water heaters to balance safety and energy use.
  5. Put the panels back, restore power, and wait 20-30 minutes.

The same basic idea applies to an electric heater that stopped blowing hot air. If the thermostat is tripped, resetting it can save you a service call. I remember one invoice from 2023 where a technician charged us $350 for what turned out to be a reset. Since then, I check the thermostat first. It doesn't fix every issue—or rather, it doesn't fix mechanical failures—but it's the cheapest test there is.

Part of me loves the savings from used equipment. Another part knows it's a gamble. A plate heat exchanger can last a long time if it's cleaned and maintained—I think we've had one in service for about 15 years, though I might be misremembering the exact installation year. But when a heat exchanger fouls or leaks, it tends to happen at the worst possible time. If you're heating a process stream or providing hot water to a washdown line, you don't want to experiment.

Sizing and installation also matter. If the unit is too small, you'll get a temperature drop. If it's too large, you'll pay for capacity you don't need. New from GEA, with a proper design review, takes the guessing out of the equation.

I'll say it plainly: I recommend new equipment for critical installations and when you need a long-term energy efficiency warranty. But if your process can tolerate some teardown time and you have budget pressure, a certified used compressor is a legitimate option.

My experience is based on about 200 MRO purchase orders over five years, mostly in a food processing plant. If you're working with large-scale ammonia refrigeration or a chemical plant, your risk tolerance and regulatory requirements are probably different. I can't speak to that.

How to Know Which Scenario You're In

  1. Is the issue an electric heater or hot water heater that's not heating? Start with the thermostat. It costs nothing and might solve the problem.
  2. Is the issue a failed screw compressor but you have time? Compare certified used GEA screw compressor options against new, but verify every claim.
  3. Is the issue a process-critical loop or a new install? Buy new, and include a GEA heat exchanger or compressor with a factory warranty in the budget.

There's no single right answer. The right answer is the one that matches your situation—and your ability to handle a surprise. If you're lucky, the surprise is just a thermostat reset and not a compressor overhaul.

Trust me on this one: check the simple thing first, ask for documentation on the big thing, and don't buy critical equipment without warranty. Take it from someone who has made both smart and dumb purchasing calls: the smart calls start with good records.
