GEA Screw Compressors & Plate Heat Exchangers: 8 Questions Before You Accept Delivery

By the time buyers ask me their real questions, the purchase order is usually already written. They aren't comparison shopping anymore. They're preparing for delivery, installation, and startup.

I'm a quality compliance manager at GEA. I review industrial refrigeration and heat-transfer equipment before it ships, and I've been in this role for over four years. Last year, the rework rate in the product lines I cover was just under 3%. Most of those cases weren't dramatic failures. They were configuration mismatches or documentation gaps that got caught before a unit left the building—which is exactly where you want them caught.

I'm not an applications engineer, so I can't tell you which GEA screw compressor model fits your heat load. What I can give you is the quality side: the questions I wish every buyer asked before accepting equipment.

1. What does “GEA WTT WP4-80 brazed plate heat exchanger” actually mean?

Let's start with the name, because it confuses almost everyone. WTT was originally an independent German heat-exchanger manufacturer. GEA acquired the company, so you still see both names on older drawings and nameplates. When someone orders a “GEA WTT WP4-80 brazed plate heat exchanger,” they're ordering a brazed plate unit from that product family.

Brazed plate heat exchangers are compact cores made from stainless steel plates that are brazed together—usually with copper or nickel—so there's no gasket that can age or leak. The WP4-80 is a widely used model. But here's the catch: the model name is not the full specification. Two WP4-80 units can differ in plate count, port size, and brazing material.

Put another way: the nameplate tells you the family, not the duty. Check the plate count and the connection sizes against your order confirmation, not just the model number.

2. Is a GEA screw compressor the best fit for every plant?

No. GEA industrial screw compressors are excellent for many applications because they compress continuously. There are no suction or discharge valves to pound and wear, and the slide valve lets the machine handle part load without constant start-stop cycling.

They're also common in ammonia refrigeration, which is a GEA specialty. But “common” and “always correct” are different. If your process runs at a fairly constant base load with a high pressure ratio, another compressor architecture might serve you better. It depends on your refrigerant, load profile, and operating envelope.

Don't order by scrolling through catalog photos. Send your refrigerant, temperatures, and load profile to the applications team early. A compressor is only as good as the match between its design and your actual conditions.

3. Can I use a GEA plate heat exchanger as a pool heater?

If you mean a residential gas pool heater, no. That's a consumer product, and it's not what this article is about. But if you're managing a hotel, health club, or apartment complex with a commercial pool, a plate heat exchanger is a legitimate way to heat the water.

The setup is simple: boiler water flows on one side of the heat exchanger, pool water on the other, and heat transfers without the two circuits ever mixing. That's often more efficient and easier to maintain than firing a pool heater directly.

The part that gets people into trouble is material selection. Chlorine, salt chlorination, and heated pool water can be aggressive to standard copper brazing. For pools with higher chloride levels, you may need a nickel-brazed unit or, in extreme cases, a gasketed plate heat exchanger with titanium plates. Confirm that specification in writing before the unit ships.

4. What documentation should arrive with GEA equipment?

If you're receiving pressure-bearing equipment, documentation isn't just administrative. It's how you prove the unit matches what you ordered and how you protect yourself later during audits or insurance reviews.

  • A packing list that matches the unit's serial number.
  • A pressure test record or certificate for the heat exchanger or vessel.
  • Material certificates where required, typically EN 10204 3.1 for pressure parts.
  • A dimensional drawing showing the envelope, connection locations, and weight.
  • For compressor packages: oil charge details, run test report, and setpoint list if controls are included.

In Europe, pressure equipment is typically marked under PED 2014/68/EU. In North America, ASME applies. All those documents should trace back to one serial number. If they don't, stop and ask why before installation begins. This was accurate as of January 2025—codes get revised, so confirm current requirements with your local inspector.

5. What's the most common quality problem you catch during inspection?

Configuration mismatch. It's not usually a leak or a cracked weld. It's a unit that was built correctly but not to the specific configuration.

Example from our own line: the order confirmed 34 plates in a brazed heat exchanger, and the first unit staged for shipment had 28. The pressure test passed fine. The duty wouldn't have. We caught it because the configuration check happens after the pressure test, and the unit went back to the line. That order slipped by two days, which is a lot cheaper than discovering the problem after installation.

Material mismatch is the close second. A copper-brazed unit specified for water with high chloride levels will eventually have problems. The correct answer might be nickel or titanium, but someone selected the standard option because it was cheaper.

Both issues have the same prevention: make the spec visible and tie it to the serial number. Photograph the nameplate, verify the plate count if you can see it, and compare everything against the order acknowledgment before you crane anything into place.

6. Can I control a GEA chiller with a Google Nest thermostat?

Short answer: no. A Google Nest thermostat is an excellent device for managing comfort in a building. It measures air temperature, learns a schedule, and tells residential heating or cooling equipment when to run.

An industrial controller does a different job. It reads refrigerant pressures, oil differential, motor current, and discharge temperature. It manages the compressor through startup and capacity changes. It responds to faults in seconds. When you treat a process compressor like a residential heating system, the failure mode isn't a chilly room. It's short-cycling, oil return problems, or a compressor trip during peak production.

Remote monitoring is a reasonable idea. But it should happen through the equipment's own control system or a building management system interface—not by pointing a smart thermostat at the process.

7. I searched “how to reset Honeywell thermostat with no reset button.” Why doesn't GEA equipment reset that way?

Home thermostats are designed for a different risk level. If you can't find the reset sequence on your Honeywell, the worst outcome is usually an uncomfortable house. Nothing breaks.

Industrial refrigeration is different. If a GEA screw compressor trips, the alarm is not a suggestion. High discharge temperature, low oil pressure, or motor overload means something changed. Clearing the message without fixing the cause is how small problems become expensive repairs.

Industrial controls do have reset functions, but they're framed as “acknowledge after the condition is corrected.” The procedure usually starts with reading the alarm history, not pressing a button. If that's not your workflow, call support instead of looking for a hidden reset.

8. Do we need a GEA technician to start up the equipment?

It depends on your team's experience. If your maintenance staff has started screw compressor packages before, has the right tools, and follows the manual, many installations can proceed without a factory technician on site. “Can” is not the same as “should” for a first-time installation.

Two things I've personally seen go wrong during startup: incorrect rotation direction and oil circulation mistakes. Both can damage a compressor quickly. For ammonia refrigeration, local regulations may also require a certified or licensed operator to be involved. I'm not a compliance consultant, so check your local code before scheduling startup.

What I'd recommend is at least a remote startup support session. It's less expensive than a service visit, and it creates a record that startup followed the procedure. You want that paperwork even if you never need it later.
