If your plant already runs on ammonia, yes. GEA ammonia compressors are a legitimate part of any serious short list. I have seen GEA screw compressors go well beyond 60,000 hours, but I have also seen a newer package fail early because the system around it was neglected. The usual causes of an emergency call are oil pressure, control power, and a dirty condenser. The rotor itself is rarely the reason I am standing in a mechanical room at 10 p.m. So when I evaluate reliability, I look at the whole package: oil management, control setup, condenser condition, and maintenance history.

Is a used GEA screw compressor package worth the risk?

Sometimes. A used package can make sense when lead time is the real emergency. In March 2024, I helped a frozen-food plant source a used GEA screw compressor package after their main unit failed. A new package was at least 12 weeks out, and their shutdown window was only three weeks. The used unit had 4,700 hours, an oil analysis report from the same quarter, and a seller who could explain why it was removed.   • Control panel model and software revision.
  • Motor nameplate voltage and starter arrangement.
  • Reason the package was removed from service.

One detail saved me on a recent job. I insisted on a clear photo of the motor nameplate before shipment. The listing said 480 V, but the photo showed 575 V. That one photo prevented a very bad Friday. The time you spend on documentation is not wasted time.

Can a diesel heater handle emergency heat?

In the right situation, yes. A diesel heater can keep a loading dock, utility room, or temporary workspace from freezing while the permanent system is being repaired. But it is a combustion appliance. It needs fresh combustion air, clearances from stored material, and properly vented exhaust. I do not recommend parking a fuel-fired heater inside a room that has ammonia piping. Diesel exhaust includes carbon monoxide, and a leak or ventilation failure can turn a quick fix into a serious incident.

There are also small 12-volt diesel heaters sold for truck cabs. Those are not a substitute for an industrial heater. If you see one with no certification marking and no rated output, treat it the same way you would treat a compressor package with no paperwork: cheap until it is not.

How do I wire a Honeywell thermostat without breaking something?

Before you touch anything, take a photo of the old thermostat and label every wire with the terminal it is connected to. Most Honeywell thermostats use the same basic letters:

  • R, Rc, or Rh: 24-volt power.
  • W: heat call.
  • Y: cooling call.
  • G: fan.
  • C: common.

Shut off power at the furnace or air handler before connecting wires. Thermostat wiring is low voltage, but shorting R to C can blow a fuse or damage the transformer. If there are only two wires and they are labeled R and W, this is probably a heat-only system. If the colors do not match the letters, follow the printed terminal labels. Wire colors are hints, not guarantees. If someone asks me the best way to wire a thermostat, my shortest answer is: label, match, verify, then restore power.

If the thermostat screen stays dark after wiring, check the fuse on the HVAC control board. Most blank-screen issues after a swap come from a short between R and C or from a missing C wire on a thermostat that needs one.

For me, the same pattern keeps showing up. A used GEA screw compressor package with no records is not necessarily a bargain. A diesel heater with no rating is not necessarily a backup plan.
